Golden Compass spurs coverage

The pre-Christmas children's fantasy movie The Golden Compass had disappointing box office returns, perhaps in part because of opposition from Christian groups.

The film, which follows the plot of the first book in Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy was criticized for its portrayal of the church (called The Magisterium) as the antagonist.

The Catholic League of Religious and Civil Rights felt moved to produce a pamphlet responding to the film, claiming the Magisterium is a strike at the Catholic church in particular.
