Article explores role of Islam in India

Beginning with a quote from a gunman at the Oberoi Hotel, this article in Time looks at the status of Muslims in India. The gunman is quoted as saying that the attacks were revenge for the poor treatment of Muslims in that country.

In India, Muslims are less than 20 percent of the population, but, according to the article, "...generally speaking, Muslim Indians have shorter life spans, worse health, lower literacy levels and lower-paying jobs."

The article takes a historical approach and is a good background for understanding tensions within India and with the country's neighboring Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Also of interest is this older article from Religion and Ethics Newsweekly.
